Presented in partnership with the Apollo Theater
Now in its seventh season, Africa Now! at the Apollo celebrates the best and most relevant voices of today’s African music scene. This season we have expanded the Africa Now! Festival to celebrate its growing prominence by presenting contemporary musicians alongside cultural innovators who are transforming television, podcasts, and film. The mainstage presentation is hosted by Young Prince with music by DJ mOma and a live performance by Kaleta & Super Yamba Band. In addition, Luvvie Ajayi, New York TImes bestselling author and Yvonne Orji of HBO's Emmy-nominated series Insecure will present their ground-breaking podcast.
Jesus and Jollof Live
Comedienne and actress Yvonne Orji and award-winning writer and cultural critic Luvvie Ajayi, two proudly Nigerian women, have teamed up for a podcast exploring their lived experiences, relationships, aspirations, and everything in between. They recognize the need for people to see others, often like themselves, living their dreams. Why "Jesus and Jollof?" Those are the two things they cannot do without.
Kaleta & Super Yamba Band
Afro-funksters Kaleta & Super Yamba Band are fronted by Afrobeat veteran Leon Ligan-Majek a.k.a. Kaleta. The singer, guitarist, and percussionist from Benin Republic spent his adolescent life in Lagos, Nigeria, where Afrobeat was born. Kaleta performed and toured the world with Fela Kuti and King Sunny Adé, along with Majek Fashek. Now based in New York City, Kaleta is backed up by Super Yamba Band who perform their take on the vintage, psychedelic sounds of his native country.
Additional Festival events include Tosin and Allinor at the Apollo Music Café, a film screening curated in partnership with the New York African Film Festival, and an Africa Now! after-party performance by Young Paris.
