A very special evening dedicated to Nordic Roots music with veteran trio Väsen from Sweden and acclaimed Finnish quartet Kardemimmit, who will be making their NYC debut.
Väsen is a Swedish trio consisting of virtuoso musicians who have been together for 30 years. Playing with a singular sound of modernity deeply rooted in the traditions of Swedish folk music, their instrumentation includes a five-string viola of sophisticated symphonic taste, an adventurous 12-string guitar, and a nyckelharpa (a “keyed fiddle”).
A fantasia of pizzicato viola, nyckelharpa harmonics and twelve-string melodicism, this was quiet, shapely majesty in a set overflowing with magic, musicality, wit and whatever the Swedish might be for bonhomie...Rob Adams, The Herald
Kardemimmit, is a female quartet who are pioneers in bringing the Finnish national instrument, the kantele, to new audiences around the world. Their music has a strong foundation in Finnish, Eastern European and Scandinavian traditions. They also sing mesmerizing vocal harmonies along with their kanteles, and the silvery tones of the instruments and the vocals blend beautifully.
The Origins Series highlights artists who delve into the folklore and roots of their respective culture’s music to tell the story of their origins, preserving and affirming cultural identities and legacies.
