Sinkane is the music of Ahmed Gallab, a recording artist who sings and plays numerous instruments (drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, etc.). His percussion-heavy style of music draws from a wide range of influences, most noticeably free jazz (e.g. Pharoah Sanders) and shoegaze (e.g. My Bloody Valentine). Born in London, Ahmed also lived in Sudan for several years before he and his family moved to the United States.
Sinkane's music comes straight out of a generosity of spirit that is on vivid display. Ahmed’s primary intention is to make music that is joyous, but also socially conscious when you scratch beneath the surface.
Ahmed Gallab is also the band leader and music director of the Atomic Bomb! Band which plays the music of Nigerian Electro-Funk Legend William Onyeabor working alongside artists such as David Byrne, Damon Albarn, Amadou & Mariam, Pharaoh Sanders, and Joshua Redman.
The Kominas draw from disparate eras including anarcho-punk, soul, surf, disco & dub; and have been known to deliver Punjabi and Urdu couplets over their dancey beats.
This concert is part of our Counterpoint Series.
