WMI MISSION
Music and dance are both a means to communicate social values and a measure of a society's aspirations. Through its concerts WMI seeks to educate, entertain, and provide spiritual nourishment. WMI's programs are intended to reinforce the cultural values of the community and to communicate to all the unique power of each individual culture.
ABOUT WMI
World Music Institute is a not-for-profit concert presenting organization founded in 1985 and dedicated to the research, presentation and documentation of the finest in traditional and contemporary music and dance from around the world.
WMI encourages cultural exchange between nations and ethnic groups and collaborates with community organizations and academic institutions in fostering greater understanding of the world’s cultural traditions. WMI works extensively with community groups and organizations including Indian, Iranian, Chinese, Korean, Middle Eastern, Latin American, Hungarian, Irish, and Central Asian. This has enabled us to be at the forefront of planning and presenting the finest ensembles from these countries.
WMI presents a full season of concerts each year in New York City, and arranges national tours by visiting musicians from abroad, as well as US-based artists. WMI’s accomplishments and expertise in its field are recognized by major institutions throughout the US and internationally. Institutions such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and UCLA regularly seek our advice. Our board of advisors includes ethnomusicologists, anthropologists, senior musicians, and other experts.
Programs take place at venues throughout the city, including Symphony Space, Town Hall, Skirball Performing Arts Center at NYU, New York City Center, the Rose Theater (Jazz at Lincoln Center), and Carnegie Hall. The artists for
World Views, an annual series at Zankel Hall presented in partnership with Carnegie Hall, are chosen by WMI’s curatorial staff. Other collaborative partners have included Aaron Davis Hall, the Center for Traditional Music and Dance, City Lore, Lincoln Center, Skirball Center, and Summerstage.
WMI works closely with culturally specific organizations to promote its events. Many concerts are presented as thematic series; these have included
The Musical World of Islam,
Masters of Indian Music,
Africa in the Americas,
Music around the Mediterranean, and
National Heritage Masters. Others are presented as festivals such as the
New York Blues Festival,
Grassroots Gospel Festival,
Festival of Indonesia, and
Festival of India. In addition to its regular programming, WMI has also produced unique shows such as the
Gypsy Caravan, which featured artists from six Romani communities, as well as India, and toured throughout the US. An internationally acclaimed film of this tour was premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2006.
WMI has brought many musical, dance and ritual traditions to the New York stage for the first time, including Laotian sung poetry, folk music of Khorason and Bushehr (Iran), songs of the Yemenite Jews, Bardic divas of Central Asia, trance ceremonies from Morocco, music from Madagascar, and Theyyams (masked dances) of Kerala, South India. Many artists have been given their U.S. or New York debuts by WMI.
Dance has always been a significant part of WMI’s programming and the annual
New York Flamenco Festival at New York City Center and other locations has become a staple of the New York winter concert season, drawing visitors from across the country and abroad. Another important winter season event, the annual
globalFEST, a collaboration with Joe's Pub at the Public Theater and Acidophilus: Live and Active Cultures in association with The Bowery Presents, has become a mecca for presenters and young people seeking the cutting edge in current world music.

WHAT THE PRESS SAYS
The World Music Institute presents just about every exotic style that musical man has devised...
--The New York Times
World Music Institute brings everything back home, from the great masters of Indian and Persian classical music to West African griots and drummers, Azerbaijani ensembles, and Norwegian fiddlers. From September to June, at least once a week, [WMI] makes it easy for New Yorkers to listen to the world without leaving town.
-- The Village Voice
It's hard to believe the World Music Institute has only been around for twenty years. Over that time, New Yorkers have come to count on its concerts as a way to discover music that may be ancient at home, but often sounds brand new and startling here.
-- The New York Times
Why get stuck in musical tourist traps when you can have the real thing?... WMI’s calendar covers a phenomenal range.
-- Time Out New York

HISTORY
World Music Institute is a not-for-profit organization, founded in 1985, and dedicated to the research, documentation and presentation of traditional and contemporary music and dance from around the world. Since its founding, World Music Institute has built the most comprehensive concert series of traditional music and dance in the United States. Through its concerts WMI seeks to entertain, educate and to provide spiritual nourishment. Music and dance in their myriad forms are both a means to communicate social values and a measure of a society's aspirations. WMI's programs of traditional music and dance are intended to reinforce the cultural values of the communities and to communicate to outsiders the unique power of each individual culture. Growing out of the concert program developed at New York's Alternative Museum between 1976 and 1985, the series has included music from more than 70 countries and ethnic minorities in Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, The Americas and the Middle East as well as regional music from throughout North America. In addition, WMI has presented innovative programs of contemporary music by American composers. WMI presents more than 60 concerts a year in New York City at locations varying from the 250-seat Washington Square Church to such formal concert venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and City Center. WMI pioneered the presenting of world music at The Borough of Manhattan Community College's Triplex Theater and New York's Symphony Space, an 850-seat theater on Manhattan's upper west side, for which we have received numerous praises. In the 1980's WMI administered and co-presented with the Society of Asian Music, a concert series at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. WMI works extensively with community groups and organizations including Indian, Iranian, Chinese, Korean, Middle Eastern, Latin American, Hungarian, Irish, and Central Asian. This has enabled us to be at the forefront of planning and presenting the finest ensembles from these countries, as well as the opportunity to do direct outreach to the communities whose music we are presenting.

MEMBERSHIP/FRIENDS
With more than 1,200 Friends of World Music Institute to date, our membership has grown steadily over the years. Our members provide insight into programming and fundraising and are our biggest supporters. The massive cuts in federal and state funding for the arts over the past few years have made your membership dollars more important than ever. Members get discounts on tickets, a free gift, no service charge for orders, and first class mailings.

EDUCATION, SYMPOSIA & MASTER CLASSES
WMI does not separate art from education. Program notes are provided at our concerts to familiarize audiences with the context, song translations (when possible), and other relevant information. For selected events pre-concert lecture/demonstrations, workshops or master classes are offered. A collaboration with the Juilliard School has yielded a very successful annual series of master classes. Artists have included Simon Shaheen (‘ud), Kayhan Kalhor (kamancheh), Gustavo Casenave (piano) and others
WMI also seeks to act as a bridge between the general public and the academic community. A symposium entitled
Immigrant Music in New York was held at Hunter College/CUNY in 1988.. This was the first of a series of symposia intended to create an ongoing dialogue between scholars, musicians, and the general public. In 1990, we organized
Re Sounding: Women and World Music, which brought together female scholars and artists from around the country. This first of its kind symposium focused on women’s musical traditions, particularly from the perspective of the artists' themselves. Our most recent collaborative symposium was
Friends of Old Time Music, co-sponsored with City Lore and Brooklyn College.

AUDIO & VIDEO ARCHIVE
World Music Institute maintains an extensive collection of audio and video recordings from many of our concerts for archival purposes. This archive is catalogued and is available by appointment to students, scholars and our members. Some of these have been released commercially onto CD format.
In the 1980s two 8-cassette series were made: Voices of the Americas (VOA) and The New Americans.Voices of the Americas included blues, gospel, Cajun, Native American and Appalachian music as well as music from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Mexico, Columbia and the Andes.VOA was also made into a radio series which was broadcast on public radio stations througout the United States. The New Americans featured performances by recent immigrant musicians from Afghanistan, Arab countries, Cambodia, India, Iran, Laos, Morocco and Vietnam. Many of these cassettes are now available as CDs. We also executive produced our first series of recordings with the Persian and Indian ensemble Ghazal, with Kayhan Kalhor, Shujaat Husain Khan and Swapan Chaudhuri.

WMI produces an ongoing CD series with the US based label World Village, of which two cds have been nominated for Grammys.
