WMI is pleased to welcome back Sona Jobarteh, a celebrated Gambian artist, composer, educator, and activist, recognized as the first professional woman kora virtuoso to hail from any of the West African Griot dynasties. Her family lineage includes a strong legacy of esteemed kora masters, particularly her grandfather, Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, and her late cousin, the legendary Toumani Diabaté. A 2023 Songlines Music Award winner, Sona is known for her exceptional instrumental skills, unique and resonant voice, intricate melodies, and charismatic stage presence. With an ear tuned to her historic legacy and the other focused on what’s ahead, she is holding space for the next generation.
