DakhaBrakha (meaning “give and take”) is a quartet from Kyiv, Ukraine, that was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art by the avant-garde Theater Director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Originally experimenting with Ukrainian folk music, the foursome then added rhythms from surrounding countries and around the globe into their music, thus creating a style they describe as “ethno-chaos”; an energetic trans-national mix based on Ukrainian traditions and infused with the band’s theatrical roots.

They have played more than 300 performances, including a sold-out show hosted by WMI at Littlefield in 2017, and have taken part in major international festivals throughout Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, Asia, Australia, and North America.

More about DakhaBrakha

“The group mixes everything from punk-pop to traditional Ukrainian songs in cool yet beguiling textures, often with the close harmonies usually associated with Balkan music. But it’s really the live shows that take DakhaBrakha beyond mere curiosity to utter brilliance.” — NPR

The COUNTERPOINT series focuses on contemporary artists who push the boundaries of what “world music” can mean in the 21st Century.
