The band Etran de L’Aïr (“stars of the air”) is a family collective from the town of Agadez nestled in the mountainous region of northern Niger. The area is known for its music; specifically the hypnotic electric guitar riffs characteristic of the desert blues of North and West Africa, popularized by artists including Vieux Farka Touré, Bombino, Habib Koité, Mdou Moctar, and Fatoumata Diawara who have turned the musical tradition into a global sensation. Locally, these performances mark community celebrations and life events such as weddings and births. Founded in 1995 by Aghaly Migi, the band is made up of family including his younger brothers whom he taught to play. After 25 years of performing, Etran De L’Aïr is no newcomer but certainly a rising star to watch.
75 Dollar Bill originated in 2012 in NYC, founded by Rick Brown (True Primes) and Che Chen (V-Effect and Curlew). Brown coaxes primal rhythms from a plywood crate, setting the stage for Chen’s vibrant guitar playing, often influenced by his experiences studying in Mauritania, resulting in what The Guardian describes as “their placeless, gripping grooves”.[
